The law calls them "tortfeasors" - those who break the rules and injure people. Why do we make them pay for the damage they cause? In part, to make sure that folks who work hard, play fair, and were following the rules are compensated for what is unfairly taken from them - lost wages, a healthy body, and unfortunately sometimes, even life itself.

But the other reason we make rule-breakers pay is to show them and others that breaking the rules will be costly. There may be a short term benefit from ignoring safety rules or cheating people, or denying responsibility for paying for medical costs, but in the long run breaking the rules, and then denying responsibility for the harm caused, hurts us all. So we make the rule-breakers make up for the harms and losses they caused not only so that the people they injure are made whole, but doing so keeps the community safe by deterring future rule violations. In short, accountability for wrong-doing helps us all.

At the Law Offices of John T. Stralen, we take great satisfaction in seeing our clients fairly compensated for their harms and losses. While we handle catastrophic injury claims and wrongful death cases, we help those who have been harmed who have a just case, regardless of the amount of at issue. Your case is important to you, and accountability of the “tortfeasor” is important to us in the community. Giving a rule breaker a pass on any case hurts our clients, the civil justice system, and the community.

We are also constantly searching for ways to look beyond compensation of our clients, to the larger social good. We use the special knowledge we gained in handling liability cases to help keep children safer by working in the community as volunteers, such as working with local attorney organizations to publicize important safety issues, provide free car seats and bicycle helmets to children, and sitting on the facilities safety committee for an elementary school. Other case specific ways we look to go beyond compensation sometimes include, as part of a settlement, negotiating company safety policy changes so that business is conducted in a safer manner. In our first meetings with our clients, we help them look for ways to accomplish the goal. The Law Offices of John T.
